Anonymous Healer Staedtler colored pencils, Jellyroll, various markers, various fineliners 2021
I’ve always had a liking towards mages, warlocks, sorcerers, and other magic wielders alike, so I went with a mage character who no one knows the name of. They are mysterious because healing itself can be mysterious in a way. The mage has a pet snake wrapped around them. Snakes in this case symbolize healing and good health, because on the medical logo, two snakes are wrapped around a pole with wings. The sky's the only colored thing in the whole image, because healing takes time, and not instant. The wand they are holding was a total accident, but I was able to make it work. It’s mimicking the way a plant looks, because plants can be used as medicine. The birds were also an accident, from what were supposed to be angel wings. The cloak the character is wearing has spots and lines, imitating lesions.
Fox With a Cancer Ribbon Relief Print 2021
I’ve always viewed animals as symbols for protection, specifically medical treatments. In this image, I had made a fox wearing a breast cancer ribbon. The fox itself represents chemotherapy, surgery, and other cancer treatments. Like a fox, chemotherapy isn’t perfect, as it can cause another cancer even if the previous cancer goes away, or it can just not work on the patient. The lines and dots shown are symbols for the mentioned errors of chemotherapy. The vest the fox is wearing represents strength on the patient/survivor. The mountain it is standing on came from an error I made while making the image I wanted to print, where the legs were disproportionate. But I got around that by making the mountain. The crookedness is also an error, but I don’t mind, as it is also a symbol of the nonexistent concept of “perfect”.
Boar in a Dome Charcoal, Jellyroll, various marker,s various fineliners 2021
I’ve been thinking of personal symbols for a while, and this is another one. This image is about mental illness and treatments, with the boar representing the effects of the medicine, while the dome he’s in represents the brain. The soil and ground represents normal brain cells, while the roots and weeds represent the genes of the mental illness(es). As someone who’s medically diagnosed with autism, I feel like it could relate to my fellow different-brained people viewing the image.
